Our First Recipient: Joe’s Story

One of our organization’s goals is to support critical medical needs within the community. With this goal in mind and with guidance from Ambal, we have identified a community member who requires immediate assistance. While many have recovered from the COVID-19 pandemic, this individual has been severely impacted and continues to struggle with their recovery. We are committed to providing comprehensive support to help them through this difficult time.

Joe has COVID-related complications, thrombosis (blood clots) from the waist down, and metastasized testicular cancer. The cancer destroyed three lumbar vertebrae, requiring a cage in his spine. He suffers from severe neuropathy in his hands, feet, and legs, and cannot stand without a special standing frame — which differs from a sit-to-stand device.

When Joe first returned home, he could not balance himself, making even a slide board unusable. His family had to use a Hoyer lift for transfers in and out of bed. Before his illness, Joe was the wholesale parts manager over four stores for Classic Chevrolet. He was later offered a high-level position at Freedom in Durant, earning over $150,000 annually. Today, his family survives on $1,800 a month in SSD income — yet they continue to find faith and gratitude in every challenge.

Having a standing frame will not only give Joe a chance to walk again but will also improve his neuropathy, blood flow, and strengthen his hips and knees. His body no longer produces blood products consistently, causing his hemoglobin to drop below 7 frequently. Chronic pain and nausea have made eating difficult, further weakening him.

Medicare has purchased some equipment, and Medicaid has provided an amazing wheelchair. However, neither will cover the standing frame. They will cover a sit-to-stand — but that requires being able to stand, which Joe cannot do. Given his current medical condition, we are mobilizing funds to purchase this essential equipment.

“This story reminds us that the pandemic’s impact continues. We are committed to providing financial and emotional support to help Joe and his family through this difficult time.”

Please join us in this mission. Any contribution — big or small — will make a tremendous difference in Joe’s life and recovery.
